MOTORS
Notice the (two) one inch long glass rods at the bottom of the supply reel. They are called reed switches and are magnetic contacts used to tell the capstan servo when the machine has changed direction. If one of them fails, the breaks will stop working in that direction. Original OEM replacements can be found on out parts page.
Guess how many bearings on the transport?
That big bearing you see there is also very common (1623DC) and about $4.00-10.00 to replace. I would recommend replacing bearings whenever you can on machines that have had no real maintenance in a while. There are two bearings in each reel-motor and three motors total: Supply, Take-up and Capstan. There are seven bearings total under the deck not counting the Capstan Flywheel. On the top side the are four pinch roller bearings, two reversing idler bearings and the fly wheel has three.
TOTAL BEARINGS ON THE TRANSPORT 16
I am trying to put togeather a complete replacement set but there are still two that have not been found for a reasonable price/quality point. I just bought 3 OEM capstan bearings on ebay for $15.00.
Who made the original motors? Indiana General Motor Corp.-Oglesby Illinois, with much dectective work, I haver not found and info on this company that post dates 1973. So do not expect to find new exact replacment motors anywhere.
